Dear Friends:

We hear a lot today about religion and
violence. "Colleague Communications"
and "Net Notes" (below) contain ample
evidence of that.

We need to remind ourselves, however,
that religious conflict is often as much
something "inter nos" (intrafaith) as it
is "between us and them" meaning those
of other faiths (interfaith). I deal with
each theme in my February and March
Anglican Journal (Toronto) columns.

In this issue I share with you the first:
"A Model for Intrafaith Dialog" and I
hope you like it.

WISDOM OF THE WEEK

Provided by Sojourners and
the Bruderhof online:

War is what happens when language fails.

- Margaret Atwood

--

They tried to bury us.
They didn't know we were seeds.

- Mexican Proverb

--

Because children have abounding vitality,
because they are in spirit fierce and free,
therefore they want things repeated and
unchanged. They always say, “Do it again”;
and the grown-up person does it again until
he is nearly dead. For grown-up people are
not strong enough to exult in monotony.

But perhaps God is strong enough to exult
in monotony. It is possible that God says
every morning, “Do it again” to the sun;
and every evening, “Do it again” to the
moon. It may not be automatic necessity
that makes all daisies alike; it may be that
God makes every daisy separately, but has
never got tired of making them. It may be
that he has the eternal appetite of infancy;
for we have sinned and grown old, and our
Father is younger than we.

- G.K. Chesteron

--

Accept surprises that upset your plans,
shatter your dreams, give a completely
different turn to your day and who knows? –
to your life. Leave the Father free himself
to weave the pattern of your days.

- Dom Helder Camara

--

We’re just a drop in the bucket, and that’s
meaningless. But we say, ‘No, wait a minute.
If you have a bucket, those raindrops fill it
up very fast. Being a drop in the bucket is
magnificent.’ The problem is we cannot see
the bucket. Our work is helping people see
that there is a bucket. There are all these
people all over the world who are creating t
his bucket of hope. And so our drops are
incredibly significant.

- Frances Moore Lappe

--

If we want to support each other’s inner lives,
we must remember a simple truth: the human
soul does not want to be fixed, it wants simply
to be seen and heard. If we want to see and
hear a person’s soul, there is another truth we
must remember: the soul is like a wild animal –
tough, resilient, and yet shy. When we go
crashing through the woods shouting for it
to come out so we can help it, the soul will
stay in hiding. But if we are willing to sit quietly
and wait for a while, the soul may show itself.

- Parker Palmer
