Dear Friends:
D-Day occurred seventy years ago. No one
should miss the opportunity to tour the
famous beaches of Normandy where much
of the action took place.
Marlene and I visited a number of the sites
and cemeteries three years ago, and it left
an indelible impression.

My Thoughts:
It comes as some surprise to some modern Christians
that inherited classical understandings are not uniform
and that there may be more than one orthodox tradition.
We go searching for insights from other faith traditions,
for example, when we would be wise to investigate our
own rich heritage first. That, at least, would make us
more informed dialogue partners and mature Christians.
The material from Richard Rohr, introduced today,
is a case in point. He shares some of the insights from
his Franciscan tradition on vexing modern theological
issues like the doctrine of the atonement as well as
linking meaning and practice.
Rohr collaborates with Canadian Tim Scorer
to assemble a five part learning experience
(using text and DVD.) Their purpose is to bring
these issues to small learning groups in local
situations in ways that many can grasp and make
personal because of the dialogical method employed.
Listening to a good teacher like Rohr expound can
be inspiring, but substantive learning is often better
experienced when people can engage the issues
with others on a face-to-face basis using the
guidance of a good teaching and process.
Here is a study worth considering. I have reviewed
(not utilized) this 90 page document and would like
to implement it in a teaching series with which I
am involved.

Hello, Wayne:
Welcome home from your trip. I continue
to read and appreciate your website/blog
Colleagues List. I find that it stimulates
discussion among friends as well as provides
sermon ideas to pursue. I recently attended
a Christian/Muslim Dialogue hosted by Walter
Wagner, a name you probably know. Some
years ago, he was with the Division of
Theological Education, LCA. The discussions
were held over a total of five Wednesday
evenings and held at Moravian Theological
Seminary, Bethlehem, PA.
The participants were mostly Lutherans,
Moravians and members of a Sufi tradition
of Islam. Walter has been involved with this
dialogue for several years and has the respect
of Muslims and Christians alike.
Very interesting and engaging.

I was invited to visit a friend who was very sick...
When I came to him, he said to me, “Henri, here
I am lying in this bed, and I don’t even know how
to think about being sick. My whole wayof thinking
about myself is in terms of action, in terms of doing
things for people. My life is valuable because I’ve
been able to do many things for many people. And
suddenly, here I am, passive, and I can’t do anything
anymore.”

were constantly thinking, “How much can I still do?”
Somehow this man had learned to think about himself
as a man who was worth only what he was doing.
